Introduction to Materials and Objects

🔹 What are Materials?

A material is any substance that is used to create or make an object. Materials are the building blocks of all objects around us. Every object we see, touch, or use is made from one or more materials.

Examples of Common Materials:

  • Paper – made from wood pulp
  • Glass – made from sand, soda ash, and limestone
  • Plastic – made from petroleum products
  • Metal – extracted from ores in the earth
  • Wood – from trees
  • Cloth – from cotton, wool, or synthetic fibers

🔹 Relationship Between Objects and Materials

  • One object can be made from multiple materials (e.g., a pen has plastic body, metal nib, and ink)
  • One material can be used to make multiple objects (e.g., wood can make chairs, tables, doors)
  • The choice of material depends on the object’s purpose and required properties
  • Bicycle: Frame (metal), tires (rubber), seat (leather/plastic), chain (metal)
  • Book: Pages (paper), cover (cardboard/plastic), binding (glue/thread)
  • Mobile phone: Screen (glass), body (plastic/metal), circuits (silicon/copper)

🔹 Why Do We Need Different Materials?

  1. Different purposes require different properties
  2. Cost considerations – some materials are expensive
  3. Availability – some materials are rare or region-specific
  4. Durability requirements – some objects need to last longer
  5. Safety concerns – some materials are safer than others
