Making Your Own Compass

🔹 Magnetizing Iron Objects

image
  1. Stroke method: Rub iron needle with magnet
  2. Same direction: Always stroke in same direction
  3. Same pole: Use same pole of magnet each time
  4. Repeat: 30-40 strokes make it magnetic
  5. Test: Check attraction to iron filings
  • Aligns magnetic domains in iron
  • Creates North and South poles
  • Temporary magnetization occurs
  • Can be strengthened by repetition

🔹 Floating Compass Construction

  • Magnetized iron needle
  • Cork or foam
  • Glass bowl
  • Water
  • Bar magnet for magnetization
  1. Magnetize the needle by stroking
  2. Pass needle through cork horizontally
  3. Float cork-needle assembly in water
  4. Wait for needle to align North-South
  5. Mark directions for reference

🔹 Historical Compass Designs

  • Used by Indian navigators
  • Fish-shaped magnetized iron
  • Floated in oil-filled vessel
  • More stable than water-based compass
  • Invented over 1000 years ago
  • Used magnetized spoon on bronze plate
  • Spoon handle pointed South
  • Revolutionary navigation tool
