Introduction to Magnets
📚 Key Concepts
🔹 What is a Magnet?
A magnet is an object that attracts certain metals, especially iron, and has the ability to attract or repel other magnets. Magnets have a special invisible force field around them called a magnetic field.

Properties of Magnets:
- Attract magnetic materials (iron, nickel, cobalt)
- Have two poles: North (N) and South (S)
- Cannot exist with a single pole
- Always point North-South when freely suspended
🔹 Types of Magnets

1. Natural Magnets:
- Lodestone: Natural magnetic rock found in nature
- Discovered thousands of years ago
- Used by ancient civilizations for navigation
- Composed of magnetite (Fe₃O₄)
2. Artificial Magnets:
- Made by humans from iron and other materials
- Stronger and more useful than natural magnets
- Can be made in different shapes and sizes
- Used in modern applications
🔹 Shapes of Magnets
Common Magnet Shapes:
- Bar Magnet: Rectangular shape, poles at ends
- U-shaped Magnet: Horseshoe shape, poles at ends of arms
- Ring Magnet: Circular with hole in center
- Disc Magnet: Flat circular shape
- Cylindrical Magnet: Rod-like shape
- Spherical Magnet: Ball-shaped magnet
Why Different Shapes? Different shapes serve different purposes – bar magnets for experiments, ring magnets for motors, U-shaped for lifting heavy objects.
