Introduction to Magnets

🔹 What is a Magnet?

A magnet is an object that attracts certain metals, especially iron, and has the ability to attract or repel other magnets. Magnets have a special invisible force field around them called a magnetic field.

Properties of Magnets:

  • Attract magnetic materials (iron, nickel, cobalt)
  • Have two poles: North (N) and South (S)
  • Cannot exist with a single pole
  • Always point North-South when freely suspended

🔹 Types of Magnets

  • Lodestone: Natural magnetic rock found in nature
  • Discovered thousands of years ago
  • Used by ancient civilizations for navigation
  • Composed of magnetite (Fe₃O₄)
  • Made by humans from iron and other materials
  • Stronger and more useful than natural magnets
  • Can be made in different shapes and sizes
  • Used in modern applications

🔹 Shapes of Magnets

Common Magnet Shapes:

  • Bar Magnet: Rectangular shape, poles at ends
  • U-shaped Magnet: Horseshoe shape, poles at ends of arms
  • Ring Magnet: Circular with hole in center
  • Disc Magnet: Flat circular shape
  • Cylindrical Magnet: Rod-like shape
  • Spherical Magnet: Ball-shaped magnet

Why Different Shapes? Different shapes serve different purposes – bar magnets for experiments, ring magnets for motors, U-shaped for lifting heavy objects.
