How characters are passed to progeny

  • Traits like eye colour, height, are passed from parents to off springs through genes.
  • Each parent contributes one set of gene to the child.
  • These genes are carried on chromosome during reproduction.
  • During sexual Reproduction fusion of male and female gamete combines genetic information à forming a new organism.

Role of genes in controlling traits:-

  • Genes are specific segments of DNA that controls particular traits.
  • Every trait is controlled by a pair of allele
  • Example:- gene for height
  • TT or TT————- >>> tall dominant
  • tt ——— >> dwarf recessive
  • Gene works by producing proteins which affects the organism structure and function(phenotype).

 Short note:-

  • Traits are inherited through genes present on chromosome.
  • Sexual Reproduction ensure variation and combination of parental traits.
  • Gene decide the genotype, which in turn determines the phenotype (physical trait).
