๐Prime Meridian, Time Zones & International Date Line
๐ฐ๏ธ Ancient Indian Prime Meridian (Ujjain)
- The Greenwich Meridian (0ยฐ longitude) we use today was not the first.
- India had its own Prime Meridian centuries earlier.
- Called Madhya Rekhฤ (Middle Line), it passed through Ujjayinฤซ (Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh).
- Ujjain was a major centre of astronomy and mathematics ๐๏ธ.
- Famous astronomer Varฤhamihira worked there 1500 years ago.
- Indian astronomers knew about latitude, longitude, and prime meridians long before Europe.

๐บ๏ธ Hemispheres of the Earth
- The Earth is divided into:
- Northern Hemisphere (above the Equator).
- Southern Hemisphere (below the Equator).
- Eastern Hemisphere (east of the Prime Meridian).
- Western Hemisphere (west of the Prime Meridian).
- These divisions help geographers locate any region more precisely.

โฐ Understanding Time Zones
- Earth rotates 360ยฐ in 24 hours โ 15ยฐ = 1 hour.
- Moving east of Greenwich โ time increases by 1 hour for every 15ยฐ.
- Moving west of Greenwich โ time decreases by 1 hour for every 15ยฐ.
๐ Example:
- 12 pm at Greenwich (0ยฐ).
- 1 pm at 15ยฐE, 2 pm at 30ยฐE, etc.
- 11 am at 15ยฐW, 10 am at 30ยฐW, etc.

๐ฎ๐ณ Indian Standard Time (IST)
- India is wide eastโwest (Gujarat to Arunachal).
- If local time were used, there would be confusion.
- India follows IST = 82.5ยฐE longitude (near Allahabad/Prayagraj).
- IST = GMT + 5 hrs 30 mins.
- ๐ So when it is 12:00 noon in London, it is 5:30 pm in India.
๐ Example activity (NCERT):
- Why is it evening in Assam ๐ while still daylight in Gujarat ๐?
- Because 30ยฐ longitude difference = 2 hours time gap.

๐ International Date Line (IDL)
- Located opposite the Prime Meridian (~180ยฐ longitude).
- Separates two calendar days.
- Crossing IDL โ change the date:
- Travelling eastward โ subtract 1 day (Monday โ Sunday).
- Travelling westward โ add 1 day (Sunday โ Monday).
- The line is not straight โ bends around some islands/countries to avoid dividing them into two dates.

๐ Countries with Multiple Time Zones
- Some countries are too large for one standard time.
- Russia โ 11 time zones ๐ฐ๏ธ.
- USA โ 6 time zones.
- Canada โ several time zones.
๐ Travelling across such countries means changing the clock โฐ multiple times.
